Can I take Magnesium with Zinc?

Understanding the interactions, benefits, and safety of combining these two powerful supplements.

Magnesium
+
Zinc

Short answer

Our sources describe something specific about taking Magnesium with Zinc:

Very high doses of zinc can reduce how much magnesium you absorb.

Magnesium

What it is: An essential mineral the body uses for muscle and nerve function, blood sugar and blood pressure control, and making protein, bone and DNA.

What the research says: Supplements may lower blood pressure slightly. People who get more magnesium from food tend to have a lower risk of type 2 diabetes, and it matters for bone health.

Cautions

  • Adults shouldn't take more than 350 mg a day from supplements unless a clinician advises it.
  • Too much from supplements can cause diarrhea, nausea and stomach cramps.

Medicines to check

  • Osteoporosis medicines (bisphosphonates) and some antibiotics: take them apart from magnesium
  • Diuretics
  • Long-term acid-reflux or ulcer medicines can lower magnesium levels

Zinc

What it is: An essential mineral for the immune system, wound healing, taste, and making DNA and proteins.

What the research says: Zinc is needed for normal immune function; it's commonly taken to make sure intake is adequate.

Cautions

  • Adults shouldn't exceed 40 mg a day from all sources unless under medical care.
  • Too much for a long time can lower copper levels and immunity.
  • Very high doses can reduce magnesium absorption.

Medicines to check

  • Quinolone and tetracycline antibiotics: take the antibiotic at least 2 hours before or 4 to 6 hours after zinc
  • Penicillamine: take at least 1 hour apart
  • Thiazide diuretics can lower zinc levels

In Holitro: Zinc (25 mg per capsule)
