Short answer

We found no direct interaction between Vitamin D and Vitamin C in the sources below, but they share a caution.

Both have a note about cholesterol-lowering statins.

Vitamin D

What it is: A vitamin that helps the body absorb calcium and supports muscles, nerves and the immune system.

What the research says: Getting enough vitamin D and calcium helps protect against osteoporosis.

Cautions

  • Adults shouldn't exceed 4,000 IU (100 mcg) a day from all sources unless a clinician advises more. Too much can cause nausea, weakness, confusion and kidney stones.

Medicines to check

  • Statins: high-dose vitamin D may make them work less well
  • Steroids such as prednisone and the weight-loss drug orlistat lower vitamin D
  • Thiazide diuretics: with vitamin D, blood calcium could rise too high

Vitamin C

What it is: An antioxidant vitamin the body needs to make collagen, absorb iron from plant foods and support the immune system.

What the research says: Vitamin C is essential; supplements make sure you get enough if your diet falls short.

Cautions

  • Adults shouldn't exceed 2,000 mg a day; too much can cause diarrhea, nausea and cramps.
  • People with hemochromatosis should avoid high doses.

Medicines to check

  • Chemotherapy and radiation: check with your care team first
  • In one study, antioxidants including vitamin C reduced the benefit of a statin plus niacin
