Short answer

We found no documented interaction between Berberine and Milk thistle in the sources below. That isn't proof the combination is right for you: check each one's cautions, and ask your pharmacist if you take medication.

Berberine

What it is: A compound from plants such as barberry and goldenseal, used in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine.

What the research says: It may lower cholesterol, triglycerides and blood sugar, but the effect may be small and lifestyle changes are still needed.

Cautions

  • Mild side effects can include appetite loss, upset stomach, diarrhea, constipation and rash.
  • Not for pregnancy or breastfeeding: it may harm newborns.

Medicines to check

  • Immune-suppressing drugs such as tacrolimus or cyclosporin: berberine may raise their levels
  • Some diabetes drugs (sulfonylureas)
  • Many prescription drugs processed by the liver: berberine may make them less effective
  • Bosutinib (a cancer drug)

Milk thistle

What it is: A flowering plant whose extract, silymarin, is sold for liver health.

What the research says: There isn't enough good evidence to draw conclusions. Small studies suggest it may help blood sugar in type 2 diabetes; liver-disease trials have been conflicting.

Cautions

  • Usually well tolerated; it can cause bloating, nausea or gas.
  • It can trigger allergies in people allergic to ragweed, daisies or marigolds.
  • Little is known about use in pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Medicines to check

  • Talk to your clinician if you take any medicine

Stop Guessing Your Dosages.

Balancing dosages across multiple different bottles is risky, inefficient, and expensive. Taking too much of one can blunt the absorption of the other.

Holitro completely solves this. We combine synergistic ingredients into one perfectly dosed daily pack, scientifically formulated for maximum absorption.
