Understanding the interactions, benefits, and safety of combining these two powerful supplements.
Short answer
We found no documented interaction between Zinc and Vitamin C in the sources below. That isn't proof the combination is right for you: check each one's cautions, and ask your pharmacist if you take medication.
Zinc
What it is: An essential mineral for the immune system, wound healing, taste, and making DNA and proteins.
What the research says: Zinc is needed for normal immune function; it's commonly taken to make sure intake is adequate.
Cautions
- Adults shouldn't exceed 40 mg a day from all sources unless under medical care.
- Too much for a long time can lower copper levels and immunity.
- Very high doses can reduce magnesium absorption.
Medicines to check
- Quinolone and tetracycline antibiotics: take the antibiotic at least 2 hours before or 4 to 6 hours after zinc
- Penicillamine: take at least 1 hour apart
- Thiazide diuretics can lower zinc levels
